Foundation in Active Support

The Active Support Foundation Programme has been developed to provide you with the most up-to-date and basic understanding in active support and what it is, and may be of particular interest to support workers, family carers, teaching assistants, personal assistants and health care assistants.

Who is it for?

The face to face learning Foundation in Active Support will provide an appropriate level of learning for those in direct contact roles while also being an essential first step for anyone looking to become a practice leader in active support.

The programme will provide learners with theoretical understanding as well as opportunity to learn and practice some skills in positive interaction with the people they support.

How is the programme delivered?

Delivered over 1 day of training, this course consists of trainer led sessions and activities.

The course will help establish a shared narrative and understanding of Active Support and how it improves quality of life for people supported and staff.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this 1-day course delegates will understand how Active Support can help to:​

  • Translate values, into practical ways to improve wellbeing.​
  • Improve relationships and interaction between support staff and the people they support.​
  • Improve outcomes by enabling people to participate in activities of daily living so they become more independent​.
  • Help you apply evidence-based learning theory, known as the model of positive interaction to achieve these outcomes

Foundation in Active Support can also be delivered as an online, blended learning programme.

Equivalent to 1 day of training, this course consists of e-learning activity followed by two short group tutorials.
