PBS helpline resources: Understanding behaviour

With funding from the Department of Health and Social Care, Bild have been providing a Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) helpline to provide support for family carers and support staff during Covid-19.

We have spoken to many people on the helpline since April 2020 and information about understanding behaviour was one of three main themes to the calls that people were asking for support with.

When people we care for behave in ways that challenge us, we can be left confused and upset. We might take it personally, as if the person is behaving like that on purpose. However, we know that behaviours that challenge are usually about someone trying to get their needs met and that there is always a reason for the behaviour.

On this page, you can find information and suggestions about:

  1. Why do concerning behaviours happen?
  2. 10 things you can do for someone with concerning behaviours
  3. Active support
  4. How to communicate effectively
  5. Building a good rapport
  6. The impact of the environment
  7. Good physical health
