Bild announces a new series of PBS group support sessions for family carers

Bild has announced new dates for family members and carers of people with learning disabilities to access small group sessions on Positive Behaviour Support (PBS). The support sessions have been funded through the Department of Health Covid Recovery Fund.

A minimum of two free Zoom sessions will be provided weekly throughout February and March. Each week Bild PBS consultants and family members of people with learning disabilities, who have trained to become PBS Peer Educators, will co-facilitate support sessions.

One of these weekly sessions will explore a PBS topic and the other session will be open so that family members and carers can discuss anything they would like support around.

“It’s been so helpful to have someone to help me get focused & give reminders about what to do.”

Topics will include:

  • What is PBS and can it really work in a family home?
  • Talking to my child’s school/care provision about PBS; key questions to ask
  • Creating Capable Environments
  • Special Educational Needs and Disability support
  • Partnership working; getting the best outcomes for the person you are caring for”

The overall aim of PBS is to improve the quality of a person’s life and that of the people around them. PBS is especially appropriate when someone is distressed or if their behaviour is concerning or described as challenging.

The group sessions for family carers have been released following Bild’s PBS Helpline for Carers, which was launched following the first lockdown in 2020. Funded by Health Education England, the uptake for the Helpline showed there is a real need for this type of support and advice.

If you are a family member or carer, these sessions will provide a space to discuss how you are doing, gain reassurance or talk through practical ideas and suggestions. Bild’s qualified and experienced PBS consultants can provide targeted coaching and strategies and the family members co-facilitating these sessions will also bring their expertise and insight.

“…It feels like a safety net, and I was definitely held in the safety net today”
