CAPBS - the UK’s leading resource for PBS and Active Support services

The Centre for the Advancement of Positive Behaviour Support (CAPBS) at BILD was set up to support the organisational and workforce development of Positive Behaviour Support.

CAPBS consultants work alongside organisations and services in the social care, education and health sectors, as well as with families who support children, young people and adults who have, or may be at risk of developing, behaviours that are concerning or challenging.

The overall aim of Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is to improve the quality of a person's life and that of the people around them.

CAPBS provides a range of learning and development options that fit within a workforce and organisational development framework. Continuing support is provided through facilitated communities of practice and practice networks that provide peer and expert support.

CAPBS  believes that a whole organisational approach is needed to embed PBS. Everybody who works in the organisation in whatever role should have a basic understanding of PBS and its value base.

The Key Messages about Positive Behaviour Support

The overall aim of Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is to improve the quality of a person’s life and that of the people around them. This includes children, young people adults as well as older people.

PBS provides the right support for a person, their family and friends to help people lead a meaningful life and learn new skills without unnecessary restrictions. It is not simply about getting rid of problematic behaviour

With the right support at the right time the likelihood of behaviour that challenges is reduced.

This is one of the key messages about PBS developed and agreed by a group of organisations active in the field: BILD, Health Education England, Skills for Care, the Challenging Behaviour Foundation, the Learning Disabilities Professional Senate, and the PBS Academy.
