Homes Not Hospitals

Bild’s Homes Not Hospitals work focuses on improving community support for people with learning disabilities and autistic people, helping support discharge and preventing unnecessary hospital admission.

Too many people with learning disabilities and autistic people are being detained in hospitals because appropriate community alternatives are not in place. We believe people should live in homes, not hospitals.

Hospitals are not acceptable places for people to live. They can negatively affect sensory needs, increase anxiety, and separate people from their homes, communities, relationships, and the places where they feel safe and comfortable.

We work alongside people with lived experience, practitioners, health and social care providers, and policymakers, using research and evidence to identify and share best practice.

In 2023, we hosted a sold-out conference with Respond and the Restraint Reduction Network: Building the Right Support through Trauma-Informed Approaches and Relational Working. We aim to continue deepening the conversation about what “right support” truly means.

We also run free webinars to share learning, provide organisational and workforce development, offer qualifications in Practice Leadership to promote good support and best practice. We work with governments and policy makers – always in partnership with people with lived experience – to strengthen policy and better protect people’s rights.
