About Reducing Restrictive Practices

Delivered in partnership with the Restraint Reduction Network our programmes support people to develop knowledge and skills to better support people and reduce the use of restrictive practices within services.

Restrictive practices can and do cause harm. People experiencing distress are often vulnerable to restrictive practices. When people are distressed, services must support people in ways that are therapeutic and uphold their human rights.

Our work is based around the six core strategies of restraint reduction, taking a trauma-informed and relational approach that enables learners understand restraint reduction theory and put learning into practice to reduce the use of restrictive practices. All our programmes have been coproduced with people with lived experience.

Restraint and restrictive practices impact people across many services – including but not limited to those supporting people with learning disabilities and autistic people. These programmes are suitable for those working in any services where restrictive practices are used. They may be of particular interest to those working in mental health, education, social care, older adult and acute health.
