Programme details

At Bild we are changing the way we deliver some of our programmes to adapt to current circumstances. We are committed to maintaining high quality, so learners have a valuable experience and are inspired to make positive changes that improve people’s quality of life.

After scrutinising the evidence base about the effectiveness of different remote of online methods, we are offering a small number of flipped learning and blended learning programmes. You will be able to complete an Introduction to Practical Functional Assessment through Distance Learning.

The flipped learning approach means that pre-recorded presentations and other resources are sent out in advance to delegates and these are complemented by live tutorials in small groups with an experienced consultant.

Having the learning materials such as the pre-recorded presentations in advance means you can look at them when it suits and your work commitments. You can use the live tutorial to discuss new knowledge with the consultant and other colleagues and review any work you have been asked to complete.

This flexible approach means video call fatigue is minimised and live online time with a consultant and the rest of the group is maximised.

We have kept the tutorial groups small (maximum of 5) and that means there is plenty of time for individual coaching as well as group discussion.

Why should you consider completing this programme?

Functional assessment is at the heart of the PBS process and has been described as an act of empathy. Good positive behaviour support depends on the quality of the behaviour support plan and how well it is understood and delivered. A PBS plan should be based on a functional behaviour assessment carried out by a practitioner who has had the right level of training.

A person centred functional assessment completed at an early stage can support understanding of the reasons why people are behaving in certain ways and means support can be adjusting to better meet people needs. This understanding can prevent serious problems arising later on and have a significant impact on everyone’s quality of life.

What does the programme cover?

Delegates will learn how to complete a Functional Assessment Interview and how to use rating scales effectively. The programme will also cover reviewing reports, reviewing recording tools and undertaking brief observations. Participants will also learn how to complete a functional assessment report and how to design interventions based on the report that informs the development of a positive behaviour support plan.

Who is the programme for?

Anyone who is interested in providing high quality evidence based support and works with people who may have some concerning behaviours that impact on their quality of life and provide some challenges to their supporters. It would be really good for practice leaders, key workers, family members or personal assistants.

Details of the programme

The programme takes place over six weeks. The presentations are sent out in advance and the tutorials take place in pre-booked time slots.

There are five online tutorials to attend and an assessment to complete. The tutorials are on Mondays and Fridays and in week 6, the final tutorial is on a Friday.

You will be coached through the assessment process and after attending four tutorials, you will be able to complete an assessment for someone you support. You will complete a functional assessment report and will present this to the group at the final tutorial in week six. This will be assessed by the programme facilitator and you will receive individual verbal and written feedback.
