This month marks 50 years since Professor Gerry Simon started Bild because he was convinced there could be better support in the community for people with disabilities. We have been championing the human rights of people with learning disabilities ever since.

At Bild we never sit still and work to collaborate closely with people with lived experience, Bild members and wider stakeholders.

To mark our 50th anniversary, we have released our Who we are and what we do resource that outlines our purpose, mission, impact and values that guide each and every thing that we do.

Ben Higgins, CEO of Bild, said: “At Bild, we want a society where everyone can enjoy the same rights and opportunities. Our work seeks to improve the lives of people with learning disabilities – including people who also have autism, mental health conditions or dementia. Marking Bild’s 50th anniversary is a fantastic opportunity to remind everyone about what we stand for, as well as the problems we are seeking to address.

“People with learning disabilities in this country are more likely to be abused, excluded, live in restrictive institutions and are at risk of dying younger. This is unacceptable and we work to change this!

“I would like to thank our Bild for the Future* members as well as our staff and Trustees with lived experience who have coproduced this resource with us. Their involvement and feedback are instrumental to shaping our future for the next 50 years.”
