Our services

Care Solutions in Surrey currently provides a community based residential service to 21 people who have a learning disability. We have six homes ranging in size from six to three bedroom accommodation. All of the people who use our services are adult, and all have moderate to severe learning disabilities. Some have additional physical and or sensory needs, and or behaviour that challenges.

The service review
The review took place during October and November 1998. It looked at services being provided to 21 people living in six residential homes in the Guildford and surrounding area. Members of the review team spent time with six people living in these homes.

The review team included, Support Workers and Managers from within the service, a Community Nurse and an Assistant Commissioning Manager from Social Services. We received support throughout the review from our 'quality coach', John Northfield.
Our thanks goes to all who supported us in the review.

What was going well

  • Staff advocate strongly for people to ensure their health needs are met.
  • People are encouraged and supported to experience meaningful activities.
  • Staff encourage people to make choices.
  • The service has systems in place to keep people safe from harassment and abuse

What we need to improve

  • People, those in particular who do not use speech to communicate need to be offered alternative methods that will assist them to make ordinary everyday choices and larger decisions.
  • Some people are experiencing limited day to day opportunities. The service needs to do more to ensure opportunities are increased.
  • Some people need greater involvement with their local community and the people within it.
  • People need to have the opportunity to access employment.

Summary
The Quality Network service review has given us the opportunity to examine our service and identify shortfalls in a positive way. It has been a worthwhile experience, which is expected to improve quality of service. We intend to repeat the review in a year's time.
