Developing positive behaviour support for individual people

Content

This event will explore policy, environmental and organizational issues, as well as discussing how strategies can be used to promote positive behaviour.

Participants should have a basic understanding of the principles of positive behaviour support and have experience of applying some of those principles within their own practice.

The event will:

  • Deliver information on current guidance, national policy and discuss legislative frameworks

  • Support delegates to develop an understanding of how to use policy frameworks to shape good practice

  • Give delegates the opportunity to develop understanding of how to implement good practice, and audit practice

  • Evaluate service delivery in terms of positive outcomes for individual people

  • Give delegates opportunity to increase understanding of proactive strategies and the context in which reactive interventions may be considered appropriate.

  • Promote the reduction on the reliance of restrictive practices including physical interventions

  • Give delegates opportunity to and develop service frameworks which adopt positive, person centred strategies to develop positive lifestyles for people who exhibit behaviours described as ‘challenging’.

 

Who should attend?

This event is for people who work in services that support people with intellectual disability and autism where the principles of positive behaviour support would be useful to apply in practice.  Also people who have responsibility for implementing or reviewing behaviour support strategies across services.

Aim:

The event/workshop will explore how policies, environmental and organizational issues can contribute to positive behaviour support.  The event focuses on a range of strategies that can be used to promote positive behaviour.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand how legislation, frameworks, codes of practice and policies relate to positive berhaviour support
  • Understand the context and use of proactive and reactive strategies
  • Be able to promote positive behaviour support
  • Be able to respond appropriately to incidents of challenging behaviour
  • Be able to support people following an incident of challenging behaviour
  • To review and revise approaches to promoting positive behaviour

This event covers some of the learning outcomes from the unit – Promote Positive Behaviour.  The unit can contribute towards the level 2/3 awards and certificates in supporting individuals with learning disabilities and level 2/3 Diploma in Health and Social Care.

This event is suitable for people who are working at level 3.

Learning will be facilitated through:

Event facilitators will employ a variety of delivery methods to include:

  • Case studies

  • Discussion

  • Pair and group work

  • Role play

 

They will use a variety of audio visual materials appropriate to the subject areas and audience.  Materials may include power-point presentations, handouts, dvd/video clips.

Handouts for the delegates to take away will support each training session, and a certificate of attendance will be handed out by the trainer at the end of each course
