The CAPBS Positive Behaviour Support Coaches Programme

The 3 day Coaches Programme has been extended to further support and enhance the transference of learning into the workplace.
Coaches will now have a workplace assignment to complete and will attend a 4th day after 6 months to present on the progress of their action plan and workplace project.
Successful Coaches will be placed to support the development and maintenance of good practice that impacts PBS positively on everyone’s quality of life.
All Coaches are invited to join the network of CAPBS Coaches where peer and expert support is available to support successful implementation of PBS, continuing professional development, collaborative working and practice sharing.
Prior knowledge requirements
The Coaches Programme is a Level 2 Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) programme − please refer to the CAPBS Workforce Development Framework, available here: www.bild.org.uk/capbstraining
Delegates will need to have prior knowledge and experience of PBS or have attended the CAPBS Foundation and Practitioner programmes.
Use the guide below to help you to decide if the PBS Coaches Programme is right for you.
You will need a basic working knowledge and understanding of:
- The person centred values associated with PBS
- The difference between the form and the function of a behaviour
- Positive and negative reinforcement
- Proactive and reactive strategies
- The antecedent, behaviour, consequence chain
- The setting conditions for behaviour
You should know what a functional assessment is and be aware of the role of environmental factors in the presentation of some behaviours of concern. You should be familiar with the components of a Behaviour Support Plan.
If you do not have extensive experience of working with people who sometimes have behaviour that is concerning or challenging you should have attended the CAPBS Level 1 programmes.
You should also have some experience of coaching or training people either in your present role or in your personal life.
An intensive programme for practitioners with some practical experience of positive behaviour support who would like to extend their knowledge and support the implementation of a positive behaviour support approach within their organisation.
This 3 day (plus a workplace assignment 1 day follow up in 6 months) residential programme will provide participants with the opportunity to discuss the current context of PBS and the specific elements of a PBS approach, as well as what should be in a behaviour support plan, restrictive practices and how to embed PBS within services and organisations.
The focus will be on supporting colleagues in the workplace to understand the main concepts and make changes to practice that will impact positively on the people being supported.
The programme will also cover the principles of coaching and participants will prepare and present a session plan for a key element of PBS.
This course will help people to meet competencies 3.1, 3.2, 3.4, 3.6, 3.7, 3.8, and 3.9 for direct care staff in the PBS Competency framework >
Describe the development and component parts of the PBS framework and demonstrate knowledge of the key areas
Analyse aspects of organisational implementation of PBS and relate them to their service or organisation
Develop an action plan to transfer learning into the workplace
Prepare resources to support workforce competence
Demonstrate how to use coaching to improve practice standards
Who should attend?
This programme is for people who have some knowledge and practical experience of delivering positive behaviour support, or have already attended a BILD Next Steps in PBS CPD event.
