Introduction to Positive Behaviour Support for speech and language therapists

A BILD CPD Learning and Development Day

About the event

This event will give delegates a foundational understanding of the values and science underpinning PBS and reflect on the role of communication and speech and language therapy within this.  It introduces therapists to a framework to understand and work on behaviours of concern within an environment that minimises the likelihood of behaviours presenting.  Delegates will be introduced to basic behavioural concepts, the analysis of behaviour as a form of communication and learn about the most likely functions of behaviours of concern.

Learning outcomes

After participating in this event delegates should have gained a basic understanding of:

  • The principles underlying positive behaviour support, including the Human Rights Act
  • What is meant by “behaviour” and the phrase “behaviours of concern” or “behaviours perceived as challenging”
  • The communicative function of behaviour and the 4 term contingency model of how behaviour is learned and maintained
  • The key communication skills that people with LD need.
  • The difference between the form and function and the range of factors that may impact on behaviour, including physical and emotional well-being
  • The speech and language therapist’s contribution to Positive Behaviour Support plans
  • The difference between proactive and reactive strategies and how to help de-escalate behaviour
  • Person centred approaches and considering what is important for and to a person when setting targets and outcomes
