Communicating effectively with people with a learning disability

Sue Thurman

This book, from the good support series, introduces the central importance of communication in all support for people with a learning disability. It explores how to meet the communication and language needs and preferences of a person and how to overcome barriers to communication.

In addition the book looks at how to communicate in ways that respect equality and diversity as well as the principles of confidentiality at work.

This book puts the person with a learning disability at the centre of the support you give. It uses real life stories, activities and thinking points to cover all of the learning outcomes and is full of practical examples of how to apply the ideas to the support that you provide.

The book is designed to support the Level 2 and 3 Diplomas in Health and Social Care (learning disability pathway) and the Common Induction Standards and in particular:

Level 2 - Introduction to communication in health and social care or children's and young people's settings
Level 3 - Promote communication in health and social care or children's and young people's settings

If you are starting work with people with a learning disability and are undertaking your induction, studying for the level 2 or 3 diplomas in health and social care, or you want the right information to help your personal development, then Communicating effectively with people with a learning disability is for you.

"...this book provides a useful overview of communication with people with a learning disability and is a valuable resource for those working with this client group."
Fiona Wilcox, City Health Journal

"I especially liked the emphasis throughout upon attending to what people with learning disabilities say to us and making sure they are sensitively supported to communicate. Do take the opportunity to explore it."
Rob Ashdown, PMLD Link Editor
