About BILD

We want people with learning disabilities to get the support they need to lead their own lives.

We listen when they tell us what has happened to them in the past. We also ask them what kind of support they want. This helps us know what needs to change, and how.

We think it’s important to listen to people’s families too - they have a lot of experience to pass on.

We work with the government and with organisations like health authorities and local Councils.

We want them to include the people getting support when they plan their services.

We also give advice to people and organisations about the best ways of working - like how to include people with learning disabilities in making decisions, and how to make support right for them.

Training people to give support in the right way

Flipchart easy read image

We train staff, family carers and people with a learning disability. We also train people where they work.

We give people who support new ideas and examples of good work so they can support people in the right way.

We involve people with a learning disability in some of the training.

Checking that people’s support is right for them

We work with people who provide services to find out if their support is meeting the needs of people who have support.

We ask them to tell us if the support is right for them - and what they would like changed.

BILD supports advocacy

Your guide to advocacy cover

We work with 7 self-advocacy groups to hear what they think about important issues and what they think should be done.

We include this in our work and what we tell other people.

We do a lot of training around advocacy and publish books like our easy read book, 'Your Guide to Advocacy'.

We help spread good ideas

easy read internet

We produce books and Journals – they are like magazines - to spread the message about the best ways of working.

They give people good ideas about how to give the right support.

Our web site does this as well.

We campaign for better services
