Students can choose to study either at the Coventry University campus or the University College Worcester (UCW) campus. Approximately 50% of the course involves practice placements which will be arranged in and around Coventry or Worcester, depending on which campus students choose. During the three years of study, students will be provided with the opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills and experience required of a learning disability nurse and on successful completion of the course will be awarded a Diploma of Higher Education in Learning Disability Nursing from Coventry University. This will be the award that will be received whether Coventry or Worcester is chosen as the main place of study. All applications must be made to Coventry University (institution code: C85), regardless of where students choose to study. If candidates wish to be considered for a place on the Worcester delivered course, please make this clear in the personal statement section on the application form. Students who are successful in the first six terms of the course have the opportunity to access modules in the third year of the course and exit with a BSc (unclassified degree). Why Choose Learning Disability Nursing? By choosing a career in learning disability nursing there will be an important part to play in meeting the health and other challenges faced by people with learning disabilities who are an integrated part of society and have the right to be valued and supported as equal citizens. However life expectancy continues to be significantly shorter when compared with the general population and as a group, people with learning disabilities experience significant health inequalities. A key role of the learning disability nurse is to assist and support people with learning disabilities to become and remain healthy, participating in a wide range of new initiatives to improve and enhance services and quality of life for people with learning disability. Learning disabilities nurses work collaboratively with people with learning disabilities, their families, other agencies and members of the community, seeking to implement and maintain values of inclusion, citizenship, choice and ensuring that opportunities for optimum physical and mental health are made available. They work across a large variety of both community, acute and primary care settings and have important roles in health promotion and improving access to mainstream health services, in as well providing direct nursing care in areas such as in multiple and complex disabilities, respite care, domiciliary services, and mental health. As a qualified learning disability nurse you will have a variety of career opportunities, including direct health care; advising and supporting other carers and professionals; education and training; management; research; or specialisation in a specific health area, such as epilepsy, continence, challenging behaviour, profound and multiple impairments. The Learning Disability Nursing Programme This is a full-time three-year course, with no course fees and normally successful candidates will be offered a non-means-tested bursary for each year of the course (see below). The course includes both theory modules (20 weeks per year) and practice modules (20 weeks per year) all of which contribute to the final exit award. Each theoretical module has a variety of student activity, including lectures, seminars, presentations, demonstrations, groupwork, debates and problem solving and you will learn alongside students studying other branches of nursing, clinical psychology, physiotherapy and paramedic science. Practice modules introduce students to the principles of learning disabilities care with a variety of clients groups and in a variety of settings with practice placements being organised for them in services located near and around their chosen campus. Mentors and link tutors will support and facilitate practice learning which will take place in a variety of settings, working with a number of carers and professionals, implementing your knowledge, developing and practicing your skills, and building your experience of supporting and empowering this group of people. You will develop competency in assessment, care planning, health action planning, implementation and evaluation of care and as the course progresses, develop skills in decision making and in the management of care. In both theory and practice you will be able to demonstrate your commitment to the support and empowerment of people with learning disabilities. In addition and uniquely, students taking this course at Coventry or Worcester will be able to choose to enhance their skills in areas such as physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, or cognitive behavioural therapy, over and above those required for entry to the professional register.
