CAPBS Practitioner Level 1B: Next steps in Positive Behaviour Support
Who is this for?
This course is for people who want to understand what Positive Behaviour Support is and how it works. It provides a basic introduction and covers the core components and principles of PBS. It covers the minimum knowledge that everyone should have in an organisation that wishes to implement PBS Approaches
Aim of the course
To provide a basic overview of PBS and give participants an understanding of what good PBS is and the underpinning values theory and processes that are part of a PBS approach. It provides a foundation for people to develop their knowledge further.
Session 1: The values and components of Positive Behaviour Support
This session covers the value base underpinning good quality services and how they are reflected in the PBS framework
Session 2: Person centred planning and action
This session covers the importance of knowing the individual person and understanding their specific needs
Session 3: Providing supportive and capable environments
This session provides and insight into the factors that influence a safe supportive environment
Session 4: Understanding behaviour
This session covers the basic principles of understanding why behaviour occurs and introduces the concepts of assessment and analysis
This programme will support participants to gain some of the knowledge in the PBS Competence Framework (PBS Academy 2015) at direct contact level.

After participating in this programme delegates should have gained a basic understanding of:
- The principles that underpin good quality services and PBS and how they relate to the current legislative framework including the Human Rights Act.
- The importance of knowing the individual person and understanding the range of strengths and needs they have.
- The difference between what is important to a person and what is important for a person.
- What is meant by the least restrictive approach.
- The factors that make people with intellectual disabilities vulnerable to showing behaviours of concern.
- Why safe, secure and predictable environments are essential and the importance of a goodness of fit between a person and their environment.
- How personal attitudes and values can impact on your responses to people and when it might be appropriate to seek personal and/or professional support.
- Why team working is important and the different roles of people that are involved with the person’s life.
- What is meant by ‘behaviour’ and the phrase “behaviours perceived as challenging” or behaviours of concern.
- The communicative function or purpose of behaviour and 4 term contingency model of how behaviour is learned and maintained.
- The difference between the form and function and the range of factors that may impact on behaviour including physical and emotional wellbeing.
