Introduction to Positive Behaviour Support and Autism 

The aim of this programme is to promote knowledge and understanding about what it might be like to experience the world if you have autism.

The facilitator will help delegates gain an understanding of how empathy and respect can support in developing the right PBS approaches so they are able to deliver the right support at the right time for the person. The programme also aims to challenge stereotypes, myths and negative attitudes about autism. 

Who is this for?

This programme is for people who support adults, young people or children who have autism and want to understand how autism affects their experience of the world. It provides an introduction to the core components and principles of Positive Behaviour Support (PBS).

It will be useful for people who want to understand how PBS approaches might be used to support and enable people with autism to maximize their quality of life and reduce their need for behaviours that have a negative impact on themselves or others.

Learning Outcomes

  • Describe the strengths and differences of people with autism  
  • Understand the meaning of neurodiversity and how it apples to people with and without autism 
  • Explain the potential sensory differences  that people with autism might experience and the impact of having different experiences might impact on behaviour 
  • Be able to think about the environmental impact on people with autism and how they might respond in non-autism friendly environments 
  • Describe the essential components of positive behaviour support approaches  
  • Explain why people with  autism might sometimes show behaviours of concern  
  • Explain the importance of supporting the physical and mental wellbeing of the person you support and trying to ensure that these are met 
  • Understand the importance of ensuring that people with autism have experience good feelings 
  • Understand that all behaviour has a function or purpose for the person 
  • Describe how to begin to create a safe, predictable, environment for the person you support understand the important of proactive working - removing stressful triggers and helping people to develop new skills to get their needs met  
  • Describe what is meant by a functional assessment 
  • Explain what a behaviour support plan is and what it should look like


This course will help people to gain some of the knowledge needed to demonstrate they have reached the competence level for direct contact in the PBS Competency Framework
