BILD responds to NICE draft guidance to improve LD service design and delivery

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has published a consultation on new draft guidelines that aim to improve service design and delivery for those with learning disabilities and behaviour that challenges. You can read the draft guidance and submit a response here

We welcome the idea of each local area having a lead commissioner for learning disabilities and/or autism who works across CCG and LA and has an aligned budget. This will encourage the right support, at the right time in the right place. BILD believes this post should be across all ages.  We also agree that good quality behaviour support plans are a key mechanism in delivering high quality support.

Positive Behaviour Support is essential to better understanding and meeting needs in order to improve quality of life. We believe PBS training needs to be available to families and all those directly supporting people.

BILD supports each organisation having support from a PBS specialist (either internal or external) who can advise on the development of staff and the organization to embed PBS. The challenge for organisations is to ensure they do not become over reliant on external consultants, and compliment this with investing in their staff who provide direct support so they have skills to provide the best possible support.

We have submitted a full response to the draft guidelines and the consultation period is open until Monday 20 November. The final publication of the guidelines is expected in March 2018.
