BILD launches new Assessing Capacity programme

BILD is launching a new training programme for managers who undertake Mental Capacity assessments for the people they support.

The Assessing Capacity programme uses the terms of the Mental Capacity Act to improve quality of life and inform system-wide improvement.

Sarah Leitch heads up BILD’s Centre for the Advancement of Positive Behaviour Support, she said: “Nationally there are still many organisations who are not maximising people’s freedom to make decisions for themselves, leading to their restriction without proper consideration of their ability to consent or refuse.

“There are times when there is little or no evidence of any attempt to maximise a person’s decision-making capacity before resorting to making decisions on their behalf, restriction or restraining them. The use of the phrase ‘best interests’ does not always indicate that there has been a process of best interest’s decision-making in accordance with The Mental Capacity At 2005.”

This training will allow delegates to consider best practice and give them an opportunity to explore its application to them and their service through practical exercises.

The programme will deliver theoretical learning in the context of case law and consider how to translate this to best practice within services. Delegates will consider the importance of applying the 5 statutory principles service / organisational wide and consider the empowerment as the most important part of MCA practice.

Training will be delivered over a two day period running concurrently (plus a further one day, six weeks later, where delegates will feed back workplace assignments). Delegates will need to attend all three days, and successfully complete the required assessments.

For a workplace programme (10 delegates from one organisation they provide the venue): £2,550.00 for BILD members, £2,775.00 for non-members.

For single delegates attending as a BILD event: £325.00
