FAQ: What is Person Centred Planning?

Index of Frequently asked questions

Person Centred Planning is at the heart of the Government’s strategy for people with learning disabilities. Using Person Centred Planning is a way of ensuring everything we do is based upon what is important to a person from their own perspective. Person Centred Planning provides a structure to help us continually listen and learn about what is important to a person now and in the future and to act on this in alliance with friends and family.

The Department of Health in England published guidance which stressed the idea of the person rather than services or systems as the driving force behind planning, and the importance of partnerships. It also recognised the need for continual checking and re-development of plans.

Person Centred Planning therefore describes a way of doing things based on some key principles. There are some specific approaches that are well used, for example:

PATH – (Planning Alternative Tomorrows with Hope)
Personal Futures Planning
Essential Lifestyle Planning
