European Project shows there is still a long way to go in meeting the needs of people with learning disabilities and mental health problems
BILD were a key partner in this European wide project to develop training and information resources for front line staff supporting people with learning disabilities who also have mental health problems.
Staff in a range of services in the partner countries completed a questionnaire aimed at understanding their experiences of supporting people with additional mental health problems. The questionnaire also looked at previous training provided, and asked people to identify their own training needs.
Following this, the TRIADD team developed training guidelines and delivered seven different training modules run in six partner countries between July 2003 and February 2005.
TRIADD has also developed a website with a range of materials to support front line staff, which was used as part of the training modules.
A great deal was learned throughout the life of this pilot project - about the subject, about the best way of conveying it through training to staff and also about transnational collaboration. The issue of mental health and intellectual disability is a hugely important one and there is still much to be addressed in this field.
Keith Smith, BILD's Chief Executive praised the project and emphasised the positive relationship that had developed both within the TRIADD team and with the partner countries. He stressed the benefits of working on common issues in European projects in this way.
