Level 3 Certificate in Independent Advocacy
About the qualification
The Level 3 Certificate in Independent Advocacy is a new, nationally recognised qualification for advocates. Studying for this qualification will enable advocates to build on their existing skills as well as learning new ones. The qualification will recognise their competence in providing good advocacy support.
The qualification is suitable for existing advocates as well as other professionals who use advocacy skills within their wider role.
There are 4 core units at Level 3
• Purpose and principles of Independent Advocacy
• Providing Independent Advocacy support
• Maintaining the Independent Advocacy relationship
• Responding to the advocacy needs of different groups of people
There are 6 specialist units at Level 4
• Providing Independent Mental Capacity Advocacy
• Independent Mental Health Advocacy
• Providing Independent Advocacy Management
• Independent Advocacy with Children and Young People
• Providing Independent Advocacy to Adults
• Providing Independent Mental Capacity Advocacy – Deprivation of Liberty
Safeguards
The learner will achieve an award of credit for each unit achieved, and must complete all four core units and one optional unit to gain the qualification.
How are the units assessed?
Learners will submit a portfolio of evidence which will demonstrate their knowledge in each of the units, as well as providing evidence that they are able to put their knowledge into practice in the workplace. Learners will be observed undertaking real work activities.

IMCA Conversion - October 09: new dates added!
BILD is a national charity committed to improving the quality of life for
people with a learning disability.
We believe
that a human rights framework is central to our future work and have appointed a
dedicated development manager for this area. There is also an
area of this website
dedicated to human rights issues.
As part of our focus on advocacy and human rights, we can now offer a
flexible conversion service for practising IMCAs who have completed their four
day DH approved training and now need to complete the IMCA unit from the Level 3
Certificate in Independent Advocacy.
Practising IMCAs are supported by
BILD’s over 10 years experience in offering qualifications backed by a learning
disability heritage going
back to the early 1970’s.
BILD provides practising IMCAs with:
| l | Unit registration with City & Guilds and certification upon successful completion |
| l | An assessor who will advise the IMCA on the evidence they need to provide in their portfolio, including observation of practice |
| l | An e-portfolio for each IMCA. This keeps costs down and can speed up the assessment process |
| l | Ongoing support for the IMCA to complete further units from the qualification if they wish. |
| l | Monthly start dates |
