The Qualifications and Credit Framework - how will it affect social care?

The Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) is a new framework which will apply to all vocational qualifications in all sectors across England, Wales and Northern Ireland

This is a new, flexible way of recognising learning and rewarding skills. It allows for the recognition of learning and qualifications in smaller chunks and enables organisations and learners to tailor qualifications to meet their needs.

The framework was introduced in August 2008, and by December 2010, all qualifications will be on this framework.

The development of the QCF had given Skills for Care and Skills for Health real opportunities to develop qualifications which truly meet the needs of individuals who receive health and social care support, and workers in the sector. Skills for Care are developing a new Diploma in Health and Social Care which will replace the current NVQ. It will allow learners to tailor their learning to their job role. Units are currently being developed and are placed regularly for consultation on the Skills for Care website.  Follow the link below to see how the qualification will be constructed, and to access a range of draft units.

BILD looks forward to the release of the units in the learning disability pathway of the Diploma.  We plan to offer services, publications and other resources to support the new qualifications. We will update our website with new information as it becomes available.
