Training and consultancy
The Softer Side of Training:
Using creative approaches to include music, drama and dance can help people to communicate in new ways and break down the barriers between ourselves.
BILD offers a wide range of training and learning opportunities accommodating people at all levels and stages in their career. BILD is able to offer your organization bespoke courses using these arts techniques to include:
Making music
Movement activities
Visual arts
Sensory development
Developing a creative culture
Planning a creative programme
As part of the softer side of training programmes BILD deliver we are able to offer:
Music for Communication
Through music we communicate across cultural and ability boundaries. In addition to musical appreciation, it can be very beneficial to participate in music making in small groups or on an individual basis. Music for communication is a short course designed to help non music specialists develop a range of activities with their students/clients to help:
Develop fine motor skills
Improve their communication skills
Express emotions
Develop turn taking skills
Develop social interaction
The course will introduce:
A range of instruments
Supporting creativity
Action songs
Soundscapes
Puppets for social interaction
Many
people with learning disabilities and specifically Autism, have a social
disability which inhibits interaction with others.
This short course shows how we can use a third party- puppets to develop this
skill. Puppets have movement and resemble people or creatures but their
movements are more predictable than humans.
Through working creatively with puppets we can help people with social
impairments to develop confidence in interacting.
This course will help with:
communication
eye contact
using hands positively
expressing emotion
learning new skills
The course will introduce:
how to work with puppets
how to structure a session
developing confidence in play
improvisation
how to make puppets.
Creative Communication
Even
the most experienced staff get stuck for new ideas as to how to make learning
innovative and creative. This one day course combines elements of music,
movement and drama to give staff ideas in using creative techniques to support
communication development in others.
This practical course encourages a greater confidence in using a range of
creative techniques.
This course covers topics including:
Using Puppets
Using Props to put ideas into context
Music to support communication and interaction
Movement to aid mobility and social interaction
Multi Sensory work
Creating multi sensory sessions and stories
Linking creative ideas.
An excellent course to affect practical changes in your organisation.
Morag Scally, BILD training associate who delivers these courses:
" Many staff see the benefits of working creatively with people with learning
disabilities, but are hindered by their lack of experience or opportunities to
develop skills. I have devised these courses specifically to meet that need. I
use music, drama, movement and puppetry to help people develop their creativity.
I have seen people who have challenging behaviours who self restrain to prevent
their self injurious behaviour, learn to communicate emotions and use their
hands positively using these puppets. Young people use music to communicate and
regulate their emotions and a young man whose main activity was pacing around a
room, develop a range of movements for interaction and to show emotion. These so
called "soft outcomes" have such a profound effect I recommend all disability
organisations develop skills to embrace their potential.
