‘A “must have” for all professionals and organisations who are charged with responsibility for delivering care to children and adults who have a learning disability.’ Journal of Learning Disabilities
Cancer is a key health issue but we know very little about cancer in people with learning disabilities. This BILD report, commissioned by the Department of Health, explores:
- What are the potential genetic, environmental and personal risks that people with learning disabilities may be exposed to?
- How do we make health education programmes accessible?
- How can people with learning disabilities best benefit from the complex cancer treatments now available?
- How can we improve rates of early diagnosis, as people with learning disabilities may not be able to report their symptoms?
Part one reviews the scientific literature. Part two includes the views of people who plan and commission cancer services, as well as health care practitioners. Together they provide an important review of current knowledge and practice.

This illustrated easy-to-read booklet is for people with a learning
disability who find it difficult to talk about any problems they have with going
to the toilet. It describes how people can keep healthy by looking after their
bladder and bowels. It also deals with the problems they sometimes have with
going to the toilet and the people who can help.
Relatively little has been written about continence in relation to people with a
learning disability. Everybody Needs Toilets has been produced in partnership
with people who have a learning disability to rectify this situation. The issues
covered are those which the people involved felt were most pertinent to their
needs and those of others. They should provide stimulus for discussion.
The easy-read format gives messages which are clear, easy to understand and
directly relevant. Many illustrations enhance the text.
The book is designed to be used by people with a learning disability with, where
necessary, the support of family carers or support workers who are expected to
customise the book to suit their own circumstances.
The book is accompanied by a workbook for support workers and carers, Helping
People with Learning Disabilities Manage Continence and a reader for managers,
Supporting Continence Management.

Continence is one of those things we seldom think about if we don’t have a problem, but which assumes massive proportions if we do. Incontinence is very much a taboo subject and relatively little has been written about it in relation to people with learning disabilities. This workbook has been produced in partnership with people with learning disabilities to rectify the situation.
By understanding continence better and improving the support available, care staff can help enhance the quality of life for individuals and, where relevant, for their families.
The purpose of this workbook is to supply you with basic information and
understanding so that you can:
• recognise when people who use services may be having a problem
• know who you should be referring them to and what you and they can expect of
health care professionals
• ensure that they have access to the same quality of treatment as non-disabled
people
• become as informed as possible about the continence support needs of the
individual concerned and make sure that everything possible is being done for
them
• ensure that you are clear about your own responsibility and are discharging it
as well as possible
The book is accompanied by an easy-read booklet for people with learning disabilities, Everybody Needs Toilets, and a reader for managers, Supporting Continence Management.

The reader explores the issues surrounding:
- the management of continence
- the self-management of continence for people with learning disabilities
