Around half of all people with learning disabilities and challenging behaviour
are subject to physical interventions. High quality training, to increase staff
skills and confidence and reduce injuries among staff and people who use
services, is therefore critical.
The BILD Code of Practice provides guidance for trainers and commissioners of
training who support adults and
children with:
• a learning disability
• an autistic spectrum condition
• special educational needs
• behavioural, emotional and social difficulties
This third edition has been substantially revised and updated and provides an
important point of reference for commissioners of services, those with
responsibility for implementing standards as well as families, carers and all
who are involved in supporting people who may be exposed to the use of
restrictive physical interventions.

The topic of physical intervention is still hugely important: the abuse of such
interventions features all too regularly in national scandals, and people with
intellectual disabilities and other individuals with complex needs are still
dying in the UK as a result of the use of inappropriate restraint.
Through rigorous analysis of current policies and practices, careful examination
of physical interventions and abusive practices, and clear discussion of
objectives and needs for the future, this new publication offers a major
overview of key developments and current best practice in the field.
Topics covered in the book are:
- The effectiveness of training in physical intervention
- Reflections on accreditation
- Evaluating the risks associated with physical interventions
- Physical interventions and family carers
- Mechanical restraint and self-injury in people with intellectual disabilities: An
- enduring cause for concern
- Ethical use of medication to manage imminent disturbed/violent behaviour in adults with intellectual disabilities
- Seclusion and time out? Questioning and defining practice
- Restraint-related deaths: Lessons for policy and practice from tragedy?
- Prevention is better than reaction – Getting our priorities right
- Antecedent interventions for people with intellectual disabilities who present challenging behaviour
- Teaching new skills to people with learning disabilities who engage in aggressive behaviour
- Restraint reduction
Please note: this is a second volume to the Ethical Approaches series, not a second edition. It does not replace the first volume but compliments it and updates the debate.

This book gives clear guidance for services developing policies on restrictive physical interventions. It includes examples of good and poor practice, checklists to assist implementation, an agenda for action at the end of each chapter and a summary of key policy principles. Chapter topics include the legal framework, risk assessment and employers’ responsibilities.
The first edition became the key reference for anyone involved in working
with
adults and children who, because of their challenging behaviour, may need some
kind of restrictive physical intervention. It has been revised to show how the
four
core principles identified in Valuing People (rights, independence, choice and
inclusion) apply to the use of restrictive physical interventions. It also takes
account of the widespread acceptance of person-centred approaches to service
development, the introduction of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and changes in
terminology.
The book will be of particular interest to:
● providers and commissioners of adult and children’s services
● schools and teachers of children with a learning disability or autism
● care staff, family carers and parents of children who present challenging
behaviour
● OFSTED and CSCI inspectors
● local education authorities
● clinical and educational psychologists
● psychiatrists working with adults and children with autism and learning
disabilities
● learning disability and RNMH nurses
● dentists

Parents and carers are often the most important influence on a child’s life and yet they very rarely receive training in strategies to help them deal with challenging behaviour. Training delivered by people who are in, or have been in, the same situation as themselves is likely to be more meaningful and produce a more positive response.
This trainer’s guide is intended to provide parents and carers, as well as professional trainers, with materials to deliver training in positive behaviour strategies.
The guide includes a CD-ROM with PowerPoint presentation and handouts and, with
the clearly set out session plans, provides a comprehensive course that is
designed to be easily understood by those who may have limited
formal training.

This report provides evidence-based information to:
· alert purchasers and providers to the types of outcomes they can expect from
different types of training
· help trainers evaluate their training, with sample measures of direct training
outcomes
The report also summarises the current knowledge on training outcomes, based on a review of existing literature and identifies areas for future research.
