Autism – answering important questions (Ireland)
Tullamore Court Hotel, Co Offaly, Ireland
12 and 13 November 2008
The label autism is a relatively new phenomenon. However, since Leo Kanner’s
original use of the term, it has become clear that a diagnosis of autism can
have a wide range of complicated implications.
Autism is not a single entity but a complex continuum. As our knowledge of
autism increases, its sheer complexity means that the provision of support and
services must be flexible and varied. This means that parents, carers and
professionals often face questions about ASD that are difficult to answer
easily.
First, what are the strengths and weaknesses of the ABA approach?
Second, how do we provide person centred services?
Third, what are the best strategies for educating and supporting people?
Fourth, how do we manage difficult behaviours in a non aversive manner?
Who should attend
This conference will be of particular benefit to parents, carers and
professionals involved in the welfare and education of people with asd.
We are expecting in excess of 75 delegates per day to this important conference
so there will be a valuable opportunity for networking with like minded
professionals, carers and service users from Ireland and other parts of the EU
during the event.

Safeguarding adults
BILD offer a suite of training programmes under the umbrella of Safeguarding Adults ranging from basic awareness to more detailed investigation and interview workshops. A refresher course has also been developed, which focuses on the impact of new legislation, aimed at staff who have already undertaken basic awareness training.
BILD is well placed to meet the challenges of forthcoming regulations, such as the introduction of the Safeguarding Vulnerable Group Act 2006 and to work with organisations to ensure systems reach a balance between promoting choice and independence whilst also protecting vulnerable people from abuse and exploitation. BILD has experience of working with statutory and voluntary agencies to develop and deliver training covering both local priorities and the national agenda.
BILD training consultants, with extensive knowledge and experience of Safeguarding Adults work, are well equipped to offer guidance and support in reviewing organisational policy & procedures.
If you would like further information or would like to discuss how BILD can help your organisation please contact Valerie Wilkinson on v.wilkinson@bild.org.uk or 01562 723022 or Amy Jones on a.jones@bild.org.uk or 01562 723041
Quality network schools pilot project
For many years the Quality Network has been a powerful tool for services to check outcomes for the people they support. BILD strongly that this person-centred approach and the focus on the quality of lives of people using services is as relevant now as it has ever been.
To date, the Quality Network has focused on adult services, but the outcomes that are used are echoed in the Government’s programme for change, ‘Every Child Matters’. We feel we have a real role to play in supporting reviews and the development of services for children and young people
A number of schools felt it could help them look at how they are supporting children and young people and provide evidence that they have involved them and BILD worked with three schools to pilot the process.
Creating celebrations
BILD
We all enjoy celebrating key moments; whether it's a birthday, an achievement,
the beginning or end of a project or the turning of the year. For some schools
and organisations this can prove difficult, when the staff have had little
experience of running events. Additionally, finding ways to enable people to
participate in a meaningful way can prove a challenge.
If you are keen to improve on your celebrations, then this course is for you.
BILD can offer you a one day 'overview' course. Or arrange for the trainer,
Morag Scally, to work directly and provide an extended course with your
organisation to develop skills and opportunities.

West Midlands LDAF evaluation project
BILD were commissioned by Skills for Care West Midlands to carry out research into the delivery, management, assessment and support provided in order to make recommendations about future implementation of the new LDQ (Learning Disability Qualifications) awards.
The final report presents the findings from a review of the use of the original Learning Disability Awards Framework (LDAF) and National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) qualifications carried out in the West Midlands region between April and August 2007. Read more

Briefing on 'time out'
BILD receives requests for information on a number of subjects. Recently we have produced guidance on the use of seclusion and the use of mechanical restraint.
Continuing our commitment to producing information and in response to specific requests, we provide this briefing on ‘time out’.
The joint Guidance published by the Department for Health and Department for Education and Skills in July 2002 describes time out as “restricting the service user’s access to all positive reinforcements as part of the behavioural programme”.
This guidance provides a framework for staff who may be considering the use of time out as a strategy to assist in supporting people who may exhibit challenging/disruptive behaviour.
Our thanks go to Tim Cooke at Maybo for his help in producing this briefing note.

Evidence based behaviour interventions:
The BILD Behaviour Support Database and quality of life indicators in young
people with intellectual disability and challenging behaviour
This research project by William Clover is part of an MSc programme at the
Tizard Centre, University of Kent at Canterbury.
The project aims to find out whether using the BILD
Behaviour Support Database will have a positive effect on the quality of
life for young people with moderate to severe learning disabilities using NCH
residential services.
The rationale is that using the data base to measure data accurately in a
behavioural framework should lead to better interventions that should lead to
increased quality of life.
Data will be collected on
- Levels of challenging/adaptive behaviour
- Choice making skill
- Level of engagement in meaningful activity
- Numbers of restrictive physical interventions
Other organizations have used the database to reduce the number of physical restraints in residential services, and it is hoped that this research project will lead to opportunities to improve the lives of young people with an intellectual disability and who exhibit challenging behaviour, through better organization of the behaviour support provided.
