Behaviour management
Briefing on 'time out'
BILD receives requests for information on a number of subjects. Recently we have produced guidance on the use of seclusion and the use of mechanical restraint.
Continuing our commitment to producing information and in response to specific requests, we provide this briefing on ‘time out’.
The joint Guidance published by the Department for Health and Department for Education and Skills in July 2002 describes time out as “restricting the service user’s access to all positive reinforcements as part of the behavioural programme”.
This guidance provides a framework for staff who may be considering the use of time out as a strategy to assist in supporting people who may exhibit challenging/disruptive behaviour.
Our thanks go to Tim Cooke at Maybo for his help in producing this briefing note.
