Learning Disability Research on Family Bereavement and Sibling Relationships at University of Wales Bangor
The European Social Fund and Mencap Cymru are funding research investigating the grief experiences of bereaved parents and family members of people with intellectual disabilities. Deirdre Reilly is leading the research, which involves interviewing bereaved family members about their experiences and asking them to complete questionnaires relating to their loss. If you wish to take part or enquire about this research contact Deirdre on 01248 351151 ext 8706 or d.reilly@bangor.ac.uk
As part of her doctorate in Clinical Psychology Mairead Doody is conducting research examining the quality of adults’ relationships with their siblings (aged 18 and over) with intellectual disabilities. The study aims to identify what factors influence the quality of these relationships, to explore whether people perceive an effect on their health and whether there are positive contributions in relationships when one of the adult siblings has an intellectual disability. If you wish to take part or enquire about this research contact Mairead via email at pspe22@bangor.ac.uk
Local charity launches website
The website was launched 'live' in the company of staff, service users and supporters of the work of Langstone Society. Over 100 people viewed the site at the event at the lecture theatre, Russells Hall Hospital. The website has been put together by people with learning disabilities and their support staff. There was great excitement as residents of the Society's homes saw themselves and their friends on the world wide web.
Catering was provided by Lunch on the Run, a local social business that provides work experience for people with a learning disability.
